A Great E-Bay Score, It Doesn't Take Much To Make Me Happy.

Hello all. Today I have a great score I grabbed on E-Bay. The auction was for a 9 card lot , 1976-1980. Sounds interesting, what cards may they be? Let's get right to it.

1977
Dave Parker, Johnny Bench, Steve Carlton

1977
Dennis Eckersley, Thurman Munson, Home Run Leaders Nettles/Schmidt

1976 Steve Carlton
1980 George Brett
1978 Don Gullet

You may say, "what's the big deal Benny, some nice cards but nothing too extreme there. I would say "take a closer look."
The price $ 3.49 including shipping. That's 38.778 cents per card. Not too bad.
Look closer. No not the fact that all the cards are off center to some degree. That was common back during that time. Look, every player fits into my collection. Yep, 7 non Mets and Yankees that I player collect plus 2 Yankees.
You may say "but Benny, you didn't have any of those Topps cards already?" I would have to answer you "Sure I have several of these cards from Topps however..........

these cards are not Topps, they're all O-Pee-Chee cards." That's right, printed in Canada, with French words and everything. I don't have too many of the O-Pee-Chee cards from back in the day so these are great additions to the binders. Except for the centering they are in very good shape so I really like the deal I scored. Like I said, it doesn't take much to make me happy.

Don't Forget about my contest HERE and spread the word.

Don't forget about Benny-Bay HERE, I will extend it to tomorrow so maybe somebody may please bid.

That's it for now.

Keep rocking your cardboard dreams people!

Let's See How Topps Did, Shall We? Contest? Sure, Why Not.

Before I start this post let me remind everybody that I am not a Topps hater, complainer, purist, and am usually very happy with the customer service I have had in several issues I have contacted Topps about. Let it also be known that I don't usually do posts like this but I figured I could have a little fun with it.

Hello all. Let's all play a little game today called "How Did Topps Do?". I received the replacement for my back ordered Diamond Give Away card from back I don't know how long ago. First let me give you a little back story. I called Topps a couple of weeks ago in reference to a missing hit from my 2012 jumbo football box. The rep was very helpful and gave me all the correct instructions for getting said missing hit. I then inquired about a missing hit from a box of 2008 Ginter I bought on a whim 2 or 3 months ago at my LCS. They very nicely told me that there was nothing they could do. Not too cool in my book, a substitution couldn't be too hard to find but they said no dice. OK, I wasn't really too surprised at that but a little disappointed. Finally I inquired about the back ordered card from my give away haul. The rep explained that Topps was trying to find the cards (that they promised mind you) on the secondary market and would continue to do so until September. If they could not find the card that was requested they would send a replacement from the year prior to the missing card along with an additional card to make up for it. I figured OK, I really wanted the card I picked but if they came up short I would get an older card plus one, not great but not terrible either. First let me show you the missing card I wanted.

1970 Topps ERA Leaders
Dick Bosman, Jim Palmer, Mike Cuellar

Pretty cool card. Let's see why I wanted this card.
  • Jim Palmer collection ~ The main reason I wanted it.
  • 1970 Topps ~ Not too many of these in my binders.
  • Washington Senators player ~ A team no longer around in that form, cool factor goes up a notch.
  • Old Yankee Stadium in background ~ Way cool to see the old (pre 70's renovation) stadium.
OK, now let's see how Topps did. I receive a bubble mailer today from them and figured maybe my missing football hit was early, that would be great, or maybe the Ryan Braun redemption from back in mid May was finally here. After I ripped it open I was a little surprised to find this letter. Right click and open in separate window to blow it up. Go ahead, we'll wait while you read it.

OK now your back, cool. Let's examine the letter a bit.

  • "Dear Valued Customer" ~ Nice, they like me, they really, really like me!
  • "Thank you for participating" ~ You're quite welcome, I enjoyed the Diamond Give Away.
  • "We have worked diligently to satisfy your order" ~Really? Giving away cards not in your possession was diligent?
  • "We have not been able to fulfill your Individual request" ~ Hmmm, the several I found listed on E-Bay for 69 cents were too much? How about the one on COMC for 40 cents? Oh, it has flaws, you would never send a card with flaws.
  • "One of which is from the same year as the card you unlocked" ~ Maybe you should inform your reps of that since they are clearly misinformed.
  • "As we believe these to be great cards" ~ We will see about that but you are the professionals so you should know.
  • "We hope you enjoy these cards" ~ I will do my best.

I've rambled enough, let's see what they sent me now.

1971 Topps Joe Keough (Flaws)
1987 Tops Jim Rice All Star (Great Condition)

Let's play the game now. How did Topps do?

  • OOPS! Year before, same year, year after, I guess they were real diligent when they picked that card.
  •  Flaws ~ well you can judge for yourself.
  •  Bonus card ~ Player is Great, set was over produced, card is in great shape.
They believe these are "great cards" ~ Boy I hope they are blowing smoke up our ass because if they really believe that we are all in trouble as collectors.

Maybe Joe was a great player I didn't know about, let's see a few stats.

Joe Keough
Born: (1946-01-07) January 7, 1946 (age 66)
Batted: Left
Threw: Left
MLB debut
August 7, 1968 for the Oakland Athletics
Last MLB appearance
July 26, 1973 for the Chicago White Sox
Career statistics
Batting average
.246
Home runs
9
Runs batted in
81
Hits
212
Runs
95
Teams

No disrespect Mr. Keough but an average career at best in the grand scheme of things.
Now you get to participate, leave a comment with your thoughts and grade and I have also added a pole to the right sidebar at the top so please vote. I will random up the comments  or something and give away some kind of prize so spread the word. I will update with the prizes as I find them.

UPDATE: Prize cards HERE, and HERE. More to come.

Don't forget to check out my new trade idea HERE also.

Group Break Loot from JABO's

Hello all. Kyle over at Juuust A Bit Outside (JABO) hosted a group break a few weeks back (#13)and I was lucky enough to pick up the Mets and Yankees. The break included a box each of  2004 Topps Pristine, 2004 SP Prospects, 2008 UD Spectrum, and 2012 Gypsy Queen. There were 19 hits up for grabs along with a whole mess of other cards. I did real well.

A bunch of base and inserts.

And some more. Anytime you have the Yankees you end up with a whole lot of cards.

These SP Prospects look soooooo much better in person then my pictures.

Now the upper end of my haul.
Serial numbered and shiny always good!

Three of the 19 hits ended up in my package. Scott Hyde and Mike Carp were a couple of Mets prospects that didn't really pan out. Carp is in Seattle now and I couldn't find any info on Hyde after he went 4-4 for the Brooklyn Cyclones in 04 and then missed 05 due to Tommy John surgery and it appears that ended his career.
I can't not be happy with a Pettitte jersey card either.
Like I said I did very well in the break.

I also picked up a 2012 Ginter Gee relic from a lot that Kyle was selling off and he also traded me a Vlad relic from the unclaimed Angels and a sweet 59 Dodgers team card he had. Thanks Kyle for an awesome break and trade, I look forward to break #14. (Some spots for #14 may still be available)

Just a reminder to check out my new little trade/auction thing I have going HERE for what I think will be a fun way to make trades.

Benny-Bay

Hello all. Today I am trying something new here on  The Buffet. I will be having auction style trade posts calling it Benny-Bay. (If you have a better name let me know) Here is how it will work:
I will put up a card or cards for trade and you can bid on them with cards of your own to trade. After a predetermined time I will accept the "best" offer and the cards go to the winner. Now book value does not have to be a factor, it's the offer I like best that will win. Obviously you know what I like so those types of offers will carry more weight. While I am not looking for money as offers but I would certainly have to consider a cash offer if you were to make one. I really am looking for a new fun way to trade. Depending on the cards I am offering I may or may not have a "reserve" on the auctions. I don't want to trade a decent relic or auto for a 1990 Donruss Julio Machado that I already have a dozen of. Once I set a bid as a leader the reserve has been met and the auction is on. If it is a "no reserve" auction then the first bid sets the bar and we go from there. I will make it clear as to any reserve level on a particular card or cards I put up. You can make bids in the comments section of the post and I will keep updating as to which offer is in the lead as the auction progresses. You can bid as often as you like and can add to a bid or change it as you wish. Tell your friends and let's have some fun with this.

I will have my first auction starting now and it will run until Thursday 8/30 around 9:00 pm Eastern time. Here are the first cards up for grabs.

2011 Topps 60 Years Of Topps Richie Ashburn #60YOT-67
2005 Bowman Heritage Mini Kelly Johnson #19
2009 Topps Heritage CHROME Manny Ramirez #C1 sn'd 1235/1960

This will be a no reserve auction so let the bidding begin. For possibly just one card these three cards could be yours.

UPDATE:  first and highest bid  is  a and g code list (jake perry, lindeman, kring, lennie guttman, bloodstained pin, lennie's ring) and base card 50.
40 minutes left at time of this update.
Auction over ~ daddyohoho wins!

On a similar note, I have begun listing and bidding a little bit on Listia. I put the link on top of the right sidebar to join. If you use that link we both get bonus credits. Nachos Grande turned me on to it and it is pretty fun. It's a cool way to get some "free" cards and other stuff so it's worth checking out so bid here and then go join there.

My Mondo Haul

Hello all. My run in NachosGrande's contest has come to an end in a super close (2votes) battle. I thank all who voted for me in all the rounds and wish the remaining competitors the best of luck in the remaining rounds. Congrats Brian (30 Year Old Cardboard) on beating me to advance, your post was great.
On to other business, I was in Thorzul's July and Mondo breaks recently and came out with a pretty nice haul. I had the Mets as usual.
The July break was a little thin but that's the risk with random lots. Here are the highlights.

There were even a few other sports, I grabbed the Saints and the unclaimed Islander card came my way.

The Mondo break was a different story as I scored 10 relic cards from the deal.
A trio of Reyes jersey cards.

A cool looking Wagner patch, and a  Wright I didn't have. A perfect name on the insert set for Piazza and Clemens, Classic Confrontations.

A Keith, a Doc, and a couple of Strawberrys to round out a sweet haul.

I certainly can't complain about that break. Thanks Bill (Thorzul) for a great break.

Keep rocking your cardboard dreams!

Saturday Night Short Track Racing At It's Best, BRISTOL!

Hello all. I'm getting ready to settle in and watch my favorite Nascar short track race, Bristol! Talladega is my favorite super speedway and Dover is my favorite intermediate track I went to Dover for ten years back in the late 90's and early 2000's and it is a fantastic place to watch a race. I haven't made it to Bristol yet but maybe someday. Bristol's 36 degree banking of a half mike track equals speed and excitement.
Here are some cards to get you in the mood.

Richard Petty and  David Pearson made Nascar what it is today with their battles back in Nascar's formative years.
I gotta throw in some Waltrips since he is my favorite. Dawgbones should like that. I wish he was still driving full time.

Here are a couple of race used sheet metal cards and a race used lug nut card. I picked these since that's what will be flying around tonight. Get ready for some bump and run tonight!

Gentlemen Start Your Engines

Don't forget to vote over at Nachos Grande, thanks to all that have.

I'm heading over to Crackin Wax  soon for BoBuBingo, my first time. You can watch too on his U-Stream channel, link over there.

Hey, did anybody notice that the Mets actually won today and scored more then 2 runs. 3 is more then 2.

That's it for now.
         Keep rocking your cardboard dreams!

Patch Card Of The Day

Hello all. Quick post today. Check out this patch card I traded for at my LCS with another regular customer
2009 Upper deck SPx
John Smoltz 57/99

That is a sweet looking patch, I love the 3 layers, like steps.

Now as any respectable Mets fan I can not like Mr. Smoltz for all the pain and suffering he's caused us over the years but as a baseball fan I have no choice but to respect his accomplishments over the years.

Do you have any cards in your collection from teams you hate, or just don't like?

Come on you can admit it, I have plenty and just showed you one.

(Boy, that was like a Fuji moment)

Don't forget to vote over at Nachos Grande.

I have to add an extra Mets logo due to the Braves feature of this post!
