Happy Memorial Day A Card Salute To The Red, White, and Blue

Happy Memorial Day from BA Benny's Benny's Baseball Card Buffet.

We must all remember the real reason for celebrating this holiday. Honor the great men and women who have given their lives in serving for this great country of ours. Never forget those who sacrificed their lives for us.

THANK YOU!!!

I also think we should remember ALL those who have served. I realize that is what Veterans Day represents but they should be remembered every day. I THANK all of the members of this great country's military branches, both past and present, for their selfless dedications to the liberty and freedoms we all enjoy every day.

THANK YOU!!!

Now in an attempt to have a little fun and bring a little baseball card action I have assembled a few RED, WHITE, and BLUE card tributes to this holiday post.

First up a NY Mets jersey card salute.

Carlos Delgado Red, Mike Piazza White, and Kieth Hernandez Blue.
I don't know where Delgado (bottom right in quad) gets a red jersey from but it helps with this picture.

Next up is three cool jersey swatches.

Dave Concepcion Red (patch actually), Jim Palmer White, and Davey Lopes Blue

How about a Cincinnati Red, a Chicago White Sox, and a Toronto Blue Jay

Bench, Thomas, and Winfield

Not too shabby of a trio. I realize Winfield is best known as a Padre and Yankee the most but I don't have too many Blue Jays in my player collection and wanted to use a hall of fame caliber player so Dave it is.

And one more single card. This was a "Card of the Day post" back in February but I think it fits in with today. I still say it's a little blurry.

I look forward to doing one of these posts for the 4th of July. (Now I just gotta find a red, white, and blue patch card)

100th Post So Let's Make it a Contest!

Welcome again Buffet readers. This will be my 100th post so why not do a little contest. I have been so happy to have been welcomed so warmly into the blogoland community over the course of the last four months and the first hundred posts here at BA Benny's Baseball Card Buffet. I have learned so much and made many new friends that enjoy the same passion as I do for a great hobby. The page has scored over 5000 hits and 50 followers which far exceeds what I expected in such a short time. I hope those numbers continue to grow as I move ahead with this little adventure and I try to improve the quality of the blog. I thank all those who stop by the Buffet and hopefully like what I am doing here and continue to come back.
I still have some Strat-O-Matic computer games so I am holding a contest here to give another one away and as usual you tell me your favorite baseball or football team and I will throw in some cards for you also. All you have to do is leave a comment on one of the following subjects and I will random off a winner from the list of all the comments.
  • What do you like about my blog and want to see more of?
  • What  one of the "gems" of your collection and why do you love it so much?
  • Who will win the World Series and who will they beat?
  • If you have a blog with over 100 posts what has changed since you started posting through now to improve your blog.
I will also give an extra entry if you are a follower, new or old,  and another extra entry if you post a link on your blog to this contest. Just to add a little more fun I will give yet another extra entry to any of my first 50 followers who refer me a new follower. All somebody has to do is become a new follower and mention your name in their post and you will get a bonus entry into the randomization. Spread the word and lets get lots of entries.

Here is a flashback of the first card I got from another blogger since starting BA Benny's Baseball Card Buffet Blog. If you can name the senders blog I will throw in yet another bonus entry into the contest.
David Wright 2009 Ultimate Collection #35  Sn'd 135/599

That make 5 possible entries for my first 50 followers and 4 possible entries for everybody else. The contest will end Thursday around 6 o'clock NY time.

Good luck to all entrants and remember to spread the word.

Let' Go Mets!

Check out their link on the top of my sidebar.

He also represented the A's in the 09 All-Star game. He's off to a good start this year also with 8 saves, a 1.02 ERA, and a WHIP of 0.96.

This card is up for trade if anybody is interested. I even still have the original redemption card too.

Darryl Strawberry Making Friends and Influencing People

Hello Again Buffet readers. You may or may not have heard that Darryl Strawberry visited the Mets locker room while they were in Washington last week. Here is the story courtesy of  NY Daily News dot com.

Jeff Francoeur and Jason Bay not bothered by Darryl Strawberry's pep talk to New York MetsBY Roger Rubin, Matt Gagne and Peter Botte
DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITERS

Strawberry gave an impromptu "pep talk" to some of the Mets stars last Thursday in Washington, imploring them to ignore the criticism and just play. A pair of newer Mets - identified on WFAN as Jeff Francoeur and Jason Bay - were said to be bothered by it right after it happened.

"That was just Darryl being passionate about the team," said one Met who asked not to be identified. "If you haven't spent a lot of time talking to him, maybe you don't realize how he can be."
If Francoeur and Bay, who had two RBI apiece in the 8-0 victory over Philadelphia Tuesday night, were initially bothered, it doesn't appear they are any longer.

"It's not like he just let us have it," said Francoeur whose second-inning single ended an 0-for-12 skid. "He wanted to let us know that we're better than we were playing and that we need to do better. It's not a big deal. It's not like he came in (cursing) at the whole clubhouse.

"If it was some Joe Blow coming in and saying it, yeah," he added, when asked if he had a problem with it.

"When you talk about someone coming and getting on guys, that's motivation," said Bay, who has a 16-game hit streak at Citi Field. "He didn't come in to (tick) guys off or anything like that. He came in to motivate guys. Sometimes when the guys in here aren't doing it, you get somebody like that and it works. . . . We've been playing well ever since."

If Francoeur was taken aback, maybe it was because he was surprised by the source and not the message.

"Shoot, my dad has jumped me 75 times harder than that before," he said. "I can take criticism and I can use advice. . . . At no point did I take exception to it.

Now when the story first came out after it happened, the NY media had Darryl pissing off the whole team and causing a ruckus in the locker room. As usual the everybody who jumped to conclusions had to take a step back and wait for the truth to come out. If you like or don't like Darryl you still have to know that he still after all these years just cares about the team and wants to see them play up to the level they should be with the talent they have. All I know is since this little "episode" the Mets have been playing much better in taking the last game in Washington and two of three from the Yankees and the first of a three game set with the division leading Phillies. (They are winning early in the second game as I write this) I really don't know if it's coincidence or if Darryl lit a little fire under the team. I don't really care as long as the wins keep coming.

Here are a few Darryl Strawberry cards to show off from my collection.
 2004 Donruss Throwback Threads sn'd 7/10
2004 Donruss World Series sn'd 196/250

1986 Topps Quaker Chewy (A cool oddball I had laying around to even up the pictures)

Subway Series Time! A Great Set From 2000!

Welcome back Buffet readers.  It's that time in the season when interleague games begin and here in New York that means a "Subway Series" between the Mets and Yankees. Last night the Yankees won 2-1 in a surprisingly well pitched game from both teams. The term "Subway Series" was coined back in 1923 when the Yankees played the Giants in the World Series. There have been 14 such World Series' with the Yankees vs the Giants, Dodgers, and Mets. When interleague play began in 1997 the term became the norm for the 2 series a year the teams play each season. Back in 2000 to the agony of  TV advertisers and baseball fans across the rest of the country the Mets and Yankees faced off in a Subway Series World Series for the first and only time to this point.
After the 2000 World Series Topps released a 100 card set chronicling the Yankees and Mets road to the meeting. First up are 52 cards of the players. (26 from each team).

Some of the Mets
and the back

Some of the Yankees

and the back
The backs show each players post season stats.

Next up are 30 cards showing each team's League Division Series and League Championship Series run. 15 NLDS and NLCS where the Mets beat San Francisco and then St. Louis , 15 ALDS and ALCS where the Yankees beat Oakland then Seattle.

These backs show specific moments from that players championship series'.

After those we have another 15 card with highlights from the World Series.

Onec again the backs show the players World Series highlights.

The last 3 cards of this 100 card set shw the NLCS, ALCS, and World Series MVP's

This last card is from the only insert set in this series. They are called "Fan Fare".  Each one of the thirty six cards in this set contain an actual subway token as explained on the back.

These are very hard to come by since they only came in these sets.

Overall I really love the set and am very happy to have one. I found this one around 2005 in a card/comic shop I used to frequent before they went out of business. The owner knew my collecting preferences and gave it to me at a very reasonable price since I was one of his card buying regulars.

Stay Tuned as I have an Upper Deck Subway Series set to show during the next Mets vs Yankees series in June.

Cards On Steroids! Vol. 2

Hello Again Buffet readers. I have three more of the over sized cards on the menu today. First up is this nice rookie card.

This jumbo Doc card measures 5x7. I added a regular sized card next to it to show the comparative size.

Another 5x7. A nice Andre Dawson to show the size difference again.

2006 Turkey Red Pedro Martinez

This Pedro measures 5 3/4 x 8. A cool 95 Topps Paul O'Neill to compare size.

These cards are way cool to add into a collection but the question of storage arises.
