Welcome back Buffet readers. It's that time in the season when interleague games begin and here in New York that means a "Subway Series" between the Mets and Yankees. Last night the Yankees won 2-1 in a surprisingly well pitched game from both teams. The term "Subway Series" was coined back in 1923 when the Yankees played the Giants in the World Series. There have been 14 such World Series' with the Yankees vs the Giants, Dodgers, and Mets. When interleague play began in 1997 the term became the norm for the 2 series a year the teams play each season. Back in 2000 to the agony of TV advertisers and baseball fans across the rest of the country the Mets and Yankees faced off in a Subway Series World Series for the first and only time to this point.
After the 2000 World Series Topps released a 100 card set chronicling the Yankees and Mets road to the meeting. First up are 52 cards of the players. (26 from each team).
Some of the Mets
and the back
Some of the Yankees
and the back
The backs show each players post season stats.
Next up are 30 cards showing each team's League Division Series and League Championship Series run. 15 NLDS and NLCS where the Mets beat San Francisco and then St. Louis , 15 ALDS and ALCS where the Yankees beat Oakland then Seattle.
These backs show specific moments from that players championship series'.
After those we have another 15 card with highlights from the World Series.
Onec again the backs show the players World Series highlights.
The last 3 cards of this 100 card set shw the NLCS, ALCS, and World Series MVP's
This last card is from the only insert set in this series. They are called "Fan Fare". Each one of the thirty six cards in this set contain an actual subway token as explained on the back.
These are very hard to come by since they only came in these sets.
Overall I really love the set and am very happy to have one. I found this one around 2005 in a card/comic shop I used to frequent before they went out of business. The owner knew my collecting preferences and gave it to me at a very reasonable price since I was one of his card buying regulars.
Stay Tuned as I have an Upper Deck Subway Series set to show during the next Mets vs Yankees series in June.
