Million Card GiveAway Goals

  Hey all. It seems like a lot of people are having their Million Card Giveaway cards sent and there seems to be mixed reviews. I have decided to focus on my team card collection through the codes I have redeemed. I currently have 49 cards in my portfolio with 21 being team card keepers. (I have a 78 Angels also that I don't need). I have 10 other cards that I am looking to keep so I do have some traders left over. I have decided to go after the 1972 Team Cards as a set. I have 9 in the portfolio .....

  I also have the Yankees here in my collection so that makes 10 of the 24 team cards from the 72 set. If anybody has any of the 14 that I still need (ironic that I still need the Mets) in your portfolio (or at home too) Shoot me an e-mail and we can make a trade. I have some older cards I can trade in my portfolio, I wouldn't expect to trade a 2001 Ivan Rodriguez for them like people keep asking me to so lets make a deal. I also would be happy to make a real through the mail trade too. Let me know.

Make a Difference, Help Those In Need.

    Hello all. Today is a plug for a fantastic idea that the Big Kahuna over at Enough Already. He has proposed a push for holiday charity that really we shouldn't need to be pushed to do but sometimes we forget how lucky we all really are. He has a few easy suggestions on some great things we all can do to help those in need. Most are easily accomplished with what comes down to the price of a few packs of cards. This is stuff we all should do year round but especially this time of the year with the holidays being here so head over there and get involved.

Some More of My "Other" Stuff, COMC Scores Pt. 4, Another Tidbit, and My Contest Reminder.

   Hello again all. Today I continue a couple of things I have been posting about recently. First up I return to the "other" card stuff I collect besides my main love of baseball cards. Today I show the hockey portion but don't blink because you may miss it. As you will see, I don't have much. I am an Islanders fan so there hasn't been much interest in that team in many years. I loved the dynasty teams from the late 70's and early 80's.

First up is the game used and auto cards.

   A dozen. My favorite is the Mike Bossy used boards card. Most were gotten as cheap free shipping add ons to e-bay purchases.

 
   Sn'd are next.

    An even 8. the top two are non Islanders but are sn'd and die cut. I tried to trade them on SCF some time back but got no bites. They look cool so in the binder they went.

    The following is an O-Pee-Chee 90-91 Islanders team set.

   I've had these for quite some time, I think its a complete but I never bothered to check.

  Finally a tip from a repair job I had way back when I worked for a coin-op video game company.

    Back in the day I worked in the vending business and would do service calls. I had a job in a card shop where he has some video games so when I finished the repair and the owner paid me he let me pick from a few things he had on the side as a tip for a job well done. I remember there was no baseball in the pile so I picked this 91-92 Upper Deck subset of NHL Heroes. I saw the Bobby Nystrom so I figured why not.

     There it is, my entire hockey collection. I may have a card or two mixed in some boxes somewhere but that's it.

   Now continuing with a COMC purchase from several months back here is part 4, the rest of the serial numbered cards.

A Yankees team gold from 2003 and some Dontrelles. The 07 white refractor is /660 and the three 08 UD Baseball Heroes are /499, /299, and /249. Yes this is the beginning of an attempt to get the rainbow so if anybody wants to help, let me know.

   Three 2008 Donruss Threads parallels of Kellen Clemens, /50, /250, /350. The Boomer Esiason is /1000. Boomer is the only football player I player collect. Ever since he started doing morning radio here in New York City on WFAN I have become a big fan and decided to collect him from all teams he played for.

    That will do it for the sn'd cards so I have one more installment left with the game used cards.

  Finally I leave you with another tidbit.

    Early politicians required feedback from the public to determine what the people considered important. Since there were no telephones, TV's or radios, the politicians sent their assistants to local taverns, pubs, and bars.. They were told to 'go sip some ale' and listen to people's conversations and political concerns. Many assistants were dispatched at different times. 'You go sip here' and 'You go sip there.' The two words 'go sip' were eventually combined when referring to the local opinion and, thus we have the term 'gossip.'

Contests Galore and A Few Other Happenings Around Blogoland. 200th Post

     Hello again readers. I only now just realized that this is my 200th post so I didn't prepare any special post to commemorate this little milestone. Instead I will just say Thank You to all of you who for some unknown reason care about what I do here on BA Benny's Baseball Card Buffet and come back regularly to see what I am up to. I truly appreciate all those who have commented, made trades with me, or just came by to read something. Don't worry though, there are plenty of other spots out in Blogoland to celebrate stuff so here's a little guide. There seems to be quite a few contests going on all over the place so I figured I would give you a little rundown.
   Since you are here already you might as well look at my little contest HERE where I am giving away some repacked fun (and something up your alley too) and it's an easy one.
   After you guess my magic number you can head on over to All About Cards and vote for some Sports Card Awards and have a shot at what promises to be a great prize. The nominees are preparing their speeches so vote away.
    When you leave the ballot box you can hop a ride over too My Cardboard Mistress to celebrate his 100th post by answering 10 questions about his blog's first 99 posts. I'll give you a hint, I participated along the way.
    Once you finish cake and champagne over there you can hail a cab and shoot over to The Daily Dimwit's place, watch a video and then pick your favorites with a chance to win them. He'll even trade you for some of the others too.
    If your head isn't spinning too much after all that you can catch the subway to the Sharpe Since 92 compound, put on your thinking cap and try to break another one of his mind boggling code contests. I have no clue so I will just watch from the stands on this one.
    Following all that fun, walk on over to Enough Already and find out what the holiday season is all about, plus by doing the right thing you can win some cool holiday swag. If you only enter one contest, this is the one for sure.

   After you get all through that gauntlet of contests relax and visit The Sewing Machine Guy's workshop and see his finished project for his grandson. All I can say is a great use of doubles. Stax of Wax Pax is giving away some 2003 Portraits and has a link to his E-Bay listings. Some cool cards up for sale there. Spastic Moose is heading home for the holidays so he's on a posting hiatus but fear not, he will still talk trade with you if you wish. Cardboard Collection's Colbey (aka FlyWheels) got hooked up by his secret Santa and has some new trade lists up. Another Redemption, Another Contest Plug, A New Contest, Another Tidbit, and a Jumbo Repack With a Surprise.

    Hello again all. A bit of deja vus today as my other Red Hot Rookie redemption arrived from TriStar Fufillment. This is #4 Mike Stanton of the Marlins. Another great looking card that I can't photograph well. All the good stuff I said about yesterdays RHR applies here as well.

    Like the #7 RHR, this one took just over 6 months to get here. I redeemed on June 11 and got it today December 14. At least Topps is consistent.

     Next on the Agenda is a Jumbo RePack from The Fairfield Company. I have seen these popping up in a few different stores so I grabbed this one while I was in Rite Aid picking up some things for the house.

    The wrapper states that 1 in every 4 have game used cards and every pack has at least 10 Hall of Famers. I'm a sucker for a shot at game used and I figure if I can get 15-20 keepers out of the pack it's worth the 5 bucks to take a shot.

     I ended up with 32 (one not pictured) of the 100 as keepers. Well at least until I see which ones I have already.

 Some pretty darn good players in that batch.  They promised Hall of Famers so here they are.

 It looked like a Mets hot pack too as I got 12 of them. As I was going through the pack this card showed up...........

   Low and behold a Graig Nettles 85 Donruss signed. Can this be? There is no COA and the word auto is not mentioned anywhere on the pack. It's not  card company certified, more like a TTM. I tried to find some info online about the company and product but no luck. I compared the signature to some others....

   I looked at a bunch of others and I think it holds up as far as similarity to the certified autos. I wouldn't think a company selling product in several different national chain stores would risk putting phony stuff in their product. I am going to say real, what do you think? I also want to spin this pack into a little contest. All you have to do is guess how many of the 32 keepers I actually need and don't have already. At the end of the post I will give the rules and a couple of small hints (and I mean small).

     Speaking of contests, Sharpe Since 92 is having another code contest over at his place. I have no clue as to how to solve it so I am plugging it in hopes that nobody can and I can get in the random for a prize so tell him I sent you when you can't figure it out either. Ha Ha.

     Here's another little bit of trivia for you:
    Common entertainment included playing cards. However, there was a tax levied when purchasing playing cards but only applicable to the 'Ace of Spades.' To avoid paying the tax, people would purchase 51 cards instead. Yet, since most games require 52 cards, these people were thought to be stupid or dumb because they weren't 'playing with a full deck.'


    I like that one.

   On to the contest rules. It's very simple, just leave a comment with a guess of how many of the 32 "keeper" cards I actually need. Only one guess per person and a number can only be picked once so read all the comments before you guess so you don't duplicate an answer as only the first one will count. A couple of small hints. The Nettles is obviously a keeper since it's an auto. The two non Mets in the second picture (far right) are also keepers for the American flag card collection and the one card I mentioned as not pictured is a keeper (Ken Griffey Sr.) . There is 4 guaranteed keepers. One more hint, I got 2 Fernando Valenzuela 87 Topps (first picture) so if I do need that one, I will only be keeping one of the two.
    You ask what the prize is??  I will give the winner all the cards I don't need plus the other 68 cards I don't want. I will also throw in some other stuff that more suits the winner's collecting preferences. Now have at it and spread the word.

A Redemption Arrives, Some Freebies Too, A Contest Plug, and Another Tidbit.

   Hey all. The mailman left me 2 fun envelopes amongst the bills, junk, and solicitations for charity today. First up is one of the two 2010 Red Hot Rookies redemptions I've been waiting for. It's #7 Domonick Brown of the Phillies. I entered the code June 1st so a little over six months was the wait.

     I think these look great, a little like the orange bordered refractors in the chrome value packs. As usual the pictures don't look any where near as good as in person.

    The backs look basically the same as the regular release except for the "RHR" in the card number. I also have shown the original redemption card. I really like the fact that everything is online now so you can keep the original redemption cards now.

    I am still waiting for #4 Mike Stanton (Marlins) that I redeemed on June 11th. If time is the same I should see that one on December 23rd. We'll see about that.

   The next order of business is some free cards I scored from Bryce over at Stax Of Wax Pax. He was doing some fall cleaning and had some extra basketball cards he was kind enough to give away. Wile I do very little basketball stuff (I may have 3 pages worth) I was happy to add two legend's cards into the limited collection.

    A great looking Magic and Dr. J! You can't go wrong with these two for sure.
    He also had a Shawn Kemp that will look great in the cards with American flags collection

  Finally I will end this post with another tidbit.

   Personal hygiene left much room for improvement. As a result, many women and men had developed acne scars by adulthood. The women would spread bee's wax over their facial skin to smooth out their complexions. When they were speaking to each other, if a woman began to stare at another woman's face she was told, 'mind your own bee's wax.' Should the woman smile, the wax would crack, hence the term 'crack a smile'. In addition, when they sat too close to the fire, the wax would melt . . . Therefore, the expression 'losing face.'

Another One of my Other Collections, A Contest Plug, and Another Tidbit

     Hello again Buffet readers. Today I am back with another of my "other" collections besides my main focus of baseball. This installment shows off some of my Nascar cards. The only base cards I collect are of my favorite driver, Michael Waltrip and legend Richard Petty. I collect any Nascar driver, owner, or personality serial numbered , refractor, autos and race used cards. Here are a few of the highlights from the racing binder.

Michael Waltrip race used sheet metal and a Michael Waltrip race used car cover.

    One of the cool things about racing cards is the race used stuff can be a variety of things.

Mark Martin race used lug nut and Sterlimg Marlin race used shirt.

    Pretty cool, a lug nut card and a shirt card. Usually they go with firesuit swatches but the Marlin is actually the shirt worn under the firesuit. That card is great also because they have the shirt pictured on the back.

Kenny Wallace/ Jeff Burton race used tire and a Michael Waltrip auto (signed in person base card)

The Wallace/Burton is a front/back card. Both sides have a separate piece of tire from each driver. 

Ken Schrader auto and Kyle Petty auto

     Kyle Petty, along with his father Richard, have two of the coolest looking autographs I have ever seen. I have another in person auto of Kyle but unfortunately have not had the honor of getting a Richard Petty Auto or race used of any kind yet.

And on to another tidbit from an e-mail a buddy sent me with some interesting origins of things.

    In the late 1700's, many houses consisted of a large room with only one chair. Commonly, a long wide board folded down from the wall, and was used for dining. The 'head of the household' always sat in the chair while everyone else ate sitting on the floor.. Occasionally a guest, who was usually a man, would be invited to sit in this chair during a meal. To sit in the chair meant you were important and in charge. They called the one sitting in the chair the 'chair man.' Today in business, we use the expression or title 'Chairman' or 'Chairman of the Board.'

"Other" Card Collections, Looking for Some Help, and Another Tidbit

    Hello again Buffet readers. Today I pose a question about "other" collections. As evidenced on my two blogs, I am a baseball card collector with the emphasis on Mets, Yankees, Topps sets and a few player and oddball collections as well as some other stuff. However my card collecting has spilled into other areas so I thought I would ask, what other cards if any do you collect after your primary love. In my next few posts I will show some of the other stuff after baseball I enjoy collecting also.

    Today I have some stuff from my largest non-baseball collections, football. I don't collect football sets but I am a Jets, Saints, and Giants team collector. Any cards from these teams work into my collections.
    Here are just a few of my favorites.

Finally another tidbit of interesting information.

   As incredible as it sounds, men and women took baths only twice a year (May and October) Women kept their hair covered, while men shaved their heads (because of lice and bugs) and wore wigs. Wealthy men could afford good wigs made from wool. They couldn't wash the wigs, so to clean them they would carve out a loaf of bread, put the wig in the shell, and bake it for 30 minutes. The heat would make the wig big and fluffy, hence the term 'big wig.' Today we often use the term 'here comes the Big Wig' because someone appears to be or is powerful and wealthy.

Think about that next time you put some bread in the oven.
