Cards On Steroids! Vol. 2

Hello Again Buffet readers. I have three more of the over sized cards on the menu today. First up is this nice rookie card.

1985 Topps Dwight Gooden

This jumbo Doc card measures 5x7. I added a regular sized card next to it to show the comparative size.

2007 Upper Deck Masterpieces Reggie Jackson

Another 5x7. A nice Andre Dawson to show the size difference again.

2006 Turkey Red Pedro Martinez

This Pedro measures 5 3/4 x 8. A cool 95 Topps Paul O'Neill to compare size.

These cards are way cool to add into a collection but the question of storage arises.

A Well Stitched Package Fom a Guy With A Sewing Machine

I came home the other day to find a package in my mailbox. While that is not a strange thing here at the Buffet, I was not really expecting anything as I have not done too much in the way of trading lately and have taken a break from E-Bay til I can replenish some funds in the "fun time" account. The return address was from "Family Sewing". Now I think of Blogoland and The Sewing Machine Guy but don't recall a trade with him. Next thought is damn, did I forget to send something out. I can be forgetful at times so it isn't a great stretch that I would forget a trade. Well I might as well open it and see what's inside. A nice bundle of cards with a note wrapped around them. "Thanks for the 206's and Tigers cards, hope you like these." Now the bell goes off! I had read a post of his about his 206 want list and had afew he needed so I just sent them along with some Tigers cards that looked sad and in need of a good home. I forgot all about it so this thank you package was a total surprise. Look what was inside.

Santana, Wright, and Reyes! All Sn'd! Nice! You can never go wrong with sn'd Mets cards in my book.

Then he started hittin some of my non Mets player collection.

A mini Ichiro. I dont do the Ginter type sets so I don't get a lot of minis and this is my first Ichiro mini. Next is what I can now say is the oldest Johnny Bench I have (1971) and a way cool 74 Stargell.

Some neat oddballs of Gwynn, Ripken, and Schmidt. I love when I can find these complete oddball sets. Usually 30-40 cards or so.

A few more HOF'ers to add. Carter, Brett, and Palmer. There was also a Dave Parker and Andre Dawson not pictured.

The coolest part of this surprise package was that I needed all but one (Dawson) of these cards for my player collection. For some like Stargell, Palmer, and Ichiro it is not a big surprise as I only have a page or two of them but for others like Carter, Ripken, Gwynn, and Schmidt it was a huge score as I have a bunch of there cards but still needed These.

Larry also left his calling card.

Nice Touch!

Contest Time! No Spelling Necessary

     Welcome back Buffet readers. Tonight BA Benny's Baseball Card Buffet is glad to offer a contest for a Strat-O-Matic Baseball game (2009 edition). I have four to give away but this contest is for one of them. I have one board game and three computer games up for grabs so the winner will have choice of either this time around.
      Since 1961, Strat-O-Matic has created the most realistic simulation of statistically accurate baseball. Every player is rated by Strat-O-Matic’s unique rating system with statistical precision in each phase of the game – batting, pitching, defense and running.  Strat-O-Matic Baseball is played with the exact same rules as professional baseball. Each major leaguer has his own Strat-O-Matic Player Card based on his overall stats from the 2009 season. The gamer controls every aspect of each play from determining the starting line-up, stealing, hitting and running to replacing the starting pitcher. Instead of a bat and ball, the gamer uses dice, player cards and charts to play the game. You are also capable of ordering different seasons so you can get your favorite teams from any year. I picked up the 1969 and 1986 seasons for the computer game I got so I could play with the Mets World Series Championship teams.      The first contest is simple. Just leave a comment about what sports related board games you played as a kid. I played several of these type of games as a kid. I did play Strat-O-Matic Baseball as a child back in the seventies as well as another baseball game called All-Star Baseball. Each player had a round card that slid into a spinner slot and each spin would determine the outcome of a play. Between this and "Strat" we would spend hours playing full seasons and keep stats for all our players and even gave out awards after we finished the season. Paydirt was also a similar game in the football realm that we played as well. This was well before the computer age and at very early days of cable tv so we really had to be creative in drafting teams since the only exposure to out of town teams and their players was the game of the week on Saturday's. Thinking back makes me think that sometimes simpler may have been better.

NPN Success! Strat-O-Matic Contest Soon!

Hello again Buffet readers. Today I have a NPN (No Purchase Necessary) score as there was a nice little envelope with the Duryea PA return address (Topps) in my mailbox today. Inside was a sweet 2009 Heritage Chrome.

2009 Topps Heritage Chrome #CHR180 Brett Gardner sn'd 1641/1960

The timing couldn't be better to get a Gardner card. With the injuries to the Yankees mounting, Gardner has been starting most games and has been making the most of his chance by hitting .333 in 29 games with a .418 OBS and 14 steals. I love when NPN's I get fit right into my team or player collections.

Also in my mailbox, actually stuffed inside my screen door due to size, was the Strat-O-Matic games for me to give away from The Buffet.

Cards On Steroids???

Hello again Buffet fans. Today I have some over sized cards from the 1984 Donruss Champions series. These cards measure 3 1/2 by 5 inches and were duplicates of the standard size set.

Here is #10 of Carl Yastrzemski next to a standard sized Doc Gooden card.

Here are two #20 Rogers Hornsby, front and back. Hornsby was a "Grand Champion" card and were Dick Perez drawn pictures. The backs had nice write ups on the players as opposed to stats on the back. Each "regular" card has a comparison to one of the Grand Champions in the set. There are 60 cards total with 10 of them being Grand Champions.

The Robin Yount #47 has a write up comparing him to Frank Robinson and the Don Sutton #41 matches him up with Walter Johnson. The Yastrzemski is grouped with Hank Aaron.

Who Is The Greatest Center Fielder in New York Baseball History?

       Hey Buffet readers. Today I pose the question of who is the greatest center fielder in New York baseball history? Well you can try to predict the answer to that question and others each week while watching The Lineup on MSG Network. You don't have to be a New York baseball fan to appreciate these great players to be debated over. I bet this guy will be considered.

You can also win very cool prizes. This week is a Goose Gosage auto ball.

       “The Lineup: New York’s All-Time Best Baseball Players,” is a new original series and interactive fantasy game that will determine the best baseball players in the history of New York. Each 30-minute episode of “The Lineup” will present a number of nominees for consideration at each position, from the Yankees, Mets, New York Giants and Brooklyn Dodgers, with one episode dedicated to the best New York manager of all-time. MSG’s Fran Healy will host a panel, consisting of Hall of Fame Mets catcher Gary Carter, former Yankee bullpen ace Sparky Lyle, New York Magazine contributing editor and baseball aficionado Will Leitch, and executive vice president of the Elias Sports Bureau Steve Hirdt. The panel will whittle down a larger list of players from each position and determine the top five from each spot on the diamond. By the end of each episode, they will crown the top player at each position and name him to the official “Lineup” card.


     With an interactive fantasy game launched in conjunction with the on-air program and hosted on  The Lineup web site, viewers can see how they stack up against The Lineup's experts. Fans will try to predict the five players who will be nominated each week and ultimately who will be selected as the starter in the final “Lineup.” Participants will receive points for each correct pick and will be eligible for weekly prizes such as signed memorabilia from baseball greats like Don Mattingly, Joe Torre, Reggie Jackson and Derek Jeter. At the end of the series, the participant with the most points will win a Grand Prize. The site will also feature chats for fans to interact and debate each position, quizzes about the nominated players, photo and video galleries, and player statistics for fans to comb through before making their picks.

 The winners of BA Benny's Baseball Card Buffet's first contest are in!

     Hello all. I am glad to announce the winners of my first contest here at The Buffet. First I must thank the eight entrants for their participation and word lists. I certainly found out in a hurry that I probably had too many letters as the word lists were quite lengthy. We all know that this was a random winner as selected from Random.org but bragging rights were still on the line for the longest list and it seemed to turn into who could last the longest as many commented that they ran out of gas compiling the lists. (I did too) The honor of the longest list and most points is The Brooklyn Met (Jason). Way to go. Brian from In the Ballpark was a close second as those two paced the rest of the field with almost double the points of third on back. Brian of Play at the Plate gets Honorable Mention for best organized list and most bonus points. There will be a little extra in your package Brooklyn Met.

      Since the turnout was not very large I have decided that all entrants win something. Name, address, team or teams of choice for extra cards (I have some football too if anybody wants some), and a list of preference for all 10 letter cards and I will give you the highest one left when your turn comes up. I realize some of these cards may not set any records for popularity but if you end up with something you don't want you can always trade it off for something else. J D is one of the "Finest"

Hey all. I was floating around Blogoland a little while back and read a post on J D's Wild Cardz about his 2010 Topps Finest box break. I commented on how I liked them and he offered me the Mets and Yankees if I wanted them. I said for sure and he was kind enough to send them out to me.

These four base cards are very sharp. As usual the camera doesn't do them justice. I really like the way these cards look and the addition of the team logo in the background is very cool.

The Jose Reyes is a blue refractor sn'd 203/299. I love the refractors! The Tobi Stoner manufactured patch auto refractor (29/75) is sweet. The border is like a mirror and the pinstripes make a nice accent to the letter patch.
