And The Winner Is............

Hello all. My 11 night run of overseeing the blackjack portion of the festival at my kids old school ended last night so I am back on a regular schedule (for now at least) and can return to posting on a normal basis. I have some unfinished business  as far as my contest so let's name the winner. I know the screen shots are a little hard to read but if you click on them you should be able to make them out.

First the list of entries. I had 15 people and 5 of them pimped so that makes 20 entries.

 The first 10

      and the second 10.

Now I randomed 5 times for the number of cards in the prize.

 Number 1

  Number 2

  Number 3

  Number 4

And number 5 which makes Kazi the winner!

Congrats to Kazi on winning! Send me your address and I will get those cards out to you.

Check out The Pack Rip Cafe for the next pack from the repack box I am featuring.

That's all for now. Keep rocking your cardboard dreams!

Flea Markets, Yes or No?

Hello all. In case you didn't know, one Mr Fuji has started his summer contest so this is my answer to his first question. Here it is:
Do you ever go to flea markets in search of collectibles? If so, what are some of your favorite flea market purchases?

I love to go to flea markets in search for hidden treasures. I always have an eye out for CD's and DVD's for those collections as well as baseball cards and other trading cards as well. I only have one regularly scheduled flea market in my general area so after the first few trips of the season good scores are hard to find. Sometimes some great deals come along like full binders of star and semi star players fall into my lap for 5-10 bucks but then there are also the dealers who think that all cards from the early 80's are worth big bucks just because they are 30 plus years old. I guess you have to take the good with the bad. I also love the church sales and garage sales to try and find hidden treasures.

Thanks for the fun contest Fuji!

Legends Of The Hall and a Contest.

Hello all. Today I am back to show off an item I picked up at my local card shop a couple of months ago during one of my weekly visits. John, who runs the shop for the owner who is ill after her husband passed away in March of 2011, had been talking up this product he had gotten in and after several prior visits of passing on it I decided to pick a box up. Historic Autographs presents Legends Of The Hall 2012 is the name and it each box consists of one graded autographed post card from a Hall of Fame player.

The artwork on the box itself is great.

The checklist is awesome (click to enlarge).  While I am not a huge collector of non Mets and Yankees old time players this checklist offered quite the selection of legends so I figured the odds were decent. Several players were Yankees along with a few Mets and a number of other players I do collect so I decided to take a chance on one of these boxes.

Let's see what HOF'er I ended up with.

Gold Hall of Fame Plaque Postcard Tom Seaver 23/26

Way cool! A Tom Terrific auto graded 9 and sn'd 23/26. The Gold Hall of Fame Plaque Postcard  is the most common version of these across the list but still rare in it's low number. John was thrilled that I pulled a Met since he felt like he talked me into buying it but I surely couldn't lose off that checklist. The framing around the postcard is pretty cool also.

The Back

A home run for me! I normally don't go for the one hit only in a box but I just took a chance since he had nothing new at the time and I wanted to open something a little out of my regular collecting realm.

In writing this post I decided to throw in a little mini contest. All you need to do is be a follower and answer a question on this post.
How much do you think I paid for this product and what would you be willing to pay judging by the checklist.

Spread the word and I will double your entries to two, just leave me a link in the comment with your answer. I will run it for a few days and do the Random dot org thing to pick the winner.  Now for the prize.

2012 Topps Tribute #91 Roberto Clemente and #55 Willie McCovey
2004 Bowman #173 Brad Sullivan Auto (on card)
2010 Bowman Sterling # USAR-38 Noe Ramirez game worn jersey
2002 Inkworks #PW2 Sharon Osborne sweatshirt relic

There you go, not the best of prizes but still some fun cards. My comments have been few as of late so a little bribery plus I want to give some stuff away so let's here what you think people.

Don't forget about The Pack Rip Cafe with a new pack today.

Also a reminder of a great break over at Cardboard Conundrum, I heard a rumor of reduced prices so check out the best of Topps 2012 so far.

That's a wrap for now, keep rocking your cardboard dreams gang!

Things Are Heating Up So It Must Be Time.....

The weather is heating up (well it's been warm for a while here in NYC) so it must be time for the annual contest extravaganza over at The Chronicles Of One Mr. Fuji. Head on over and check it out, if you are new to Blogoland you don't want to miss out on this one.

Group Break Pimp

Group Break over at Cardboard Conundrum where Matt is dubbing it the "Best of 2012 Topps so far". In this break he has one hobby box each of 2012 Gypsy Queen, Archives, Heritage, and Jumbo boxes of Topps Series 1 and 2 (one of each). That's a bunch of boxes and there is more, if all 30 teams go he will add another Gypsy Queen box. That means at least 13 hits and maybe 17 but there is even more. Matt has guaranteed each team a hit, that's right every team gets a hit so if your team doesn't pull one he will add one from his collection. But wait, there is even more on the table. Everybody who takes a team and pimps the break gets an entry into a drawing for a Reggie Jackson bat card, yes I said a Reggie Jackson bat card. Holy crap that's a lot of stuff!

Go check it out, jump on in, and tell them I sent you.

Trade Post All The Way From The Backstop + 2 Break Pimps

Hello all. Today I have a trade post from a deal with Marcus, a Padres fan with a great spot in Blogoland called  All The Way To The Backstop.  (Group Break pimps to follow) I forget how I stumbled into his blog, probably a link from somebody else's spot, but i instantly was impressed with his posts so I had to "follow" along. He posted up about wanting to clean out some cards in exchange for some Padres so I hopped on my usual Mets and Yankees. He promised a mix from the "over production" era (I don't like the term junk wax either) and he surely delivered.

Four nice stacks, two Mets and two Yanks, arrived in the mailbox today and the variety was great.

Some Classic Mets, the range of players from superstars to one season stopovers make for a great mix for the team collection.

A bunch of Yankees from 20 to 30 years ago look good. Some Bernie's, Donnie Baseball's, a Yogi, the Babe, and who doesn't love the Oscar Gamble afro from 1980.

Add in a bunch from 2012 to round out the mix and we have a great package from a die hard Padres fan. I have no Padre trading partners so All The Way To The Backstop is my new destination for Friars cards. Thanks a bunch Marcus, I have a pile of Padres heading your way shortly.

In other happenings around Blogoland, I am in and want to promote 2 group breaks. First one is over at Once A Cub where he is busting out not 1, not 2, but 3 boxes of Topps Series 2. Head on over and grab some teams at a good price. Group Break #2 is over at Cardboard Conundrum where Matt is dubbing it the "Best of 2012 Topps so far".

Go check them out and jump on in both and tell them I sent you.

That's a wrap for me for now.
Keep rocking your cardboard dreams people!

Got Wood? 1995 Leaf Limited Lumberjacks Do!

Hello all. Today I have some fun from back in 1995 to show off. Back in 95' Donruss released their Leaf Limited product which was split into two 96 card series with this being their answer to Topps Finest, SP, Flair, etc. The big insert set were the Lumberjacks inserts sn'd to /5000 with numbers 1 thru 8 in series one and 9 thru 16 in series two.

1995 Lumberjacks #7 of 16 Kirby Puckett 3371/5000
The front had a wooden material to simulate the feel of wood, a bat perhaps, and really has a very nice look and feel to them.

The backs have a glossy look and feel with the serial number stamped on it. These are great cards and really stand out for their era before autos and relics took over the industry. Here is the checklist if you feel like a fun challenge to put the set together.

Series One
1 Albert Belle
2 Barry Bonds
3 Juan Gonzalez
4 Ken Griffey Jr.
5 Fred McGriff
6 Mike Piazza
7 Kirby Puckett
8 Mo Vaughn

Series Two
9 Frank Thomas
10 Jeff Bagwell
11 Matt Williams
12 Jose Canseco
13 Raul Mondesi
14 Manny Ramirez
15 Cecil Fielder
16 Cal Ripken

I won't be chasing the set but am on the lookout for the Bonds, Griffey Jr, Piazza, Thomas, and Ripken. These are great looking inserts and are a great addition to any collection. I gotta find a pack 95 Leaf Limited for The Pack Rip Cafe to see if I can get lucky and find another one. I believe they are seeded 1:23 packs or just under one per box.

Check out The Pack Rip Cafe today for some early 90's hoops Team USA style.

Keep rocking those cardboard dreams!

And They Said It Would Never Happen!

Breaking News!!

Johan Santana pitches the first no-hitter in NY Mets history!

It only took 50 years and 8020 games to happen but it finally has! A Mets No-Hitter! Thank You Johan Santana! A few no hitter fun facts (not so fun for Mets fans):

7 pitchers have thrown no hitters after leaving the Mets. Tom Seaver (the only other Met to get into the 9th inning with a no-no) Nolan Ryan (7 total, his 4th no-no was on this same date in 1975), Doc Gooden (Yankees), David Cone (Yankees perfect game), Hideo Nomo( before and after), Mike Scott, and Phil Humber (perfect game).

6 pitchers have thrown no hitters against the Mets. Sandy Koufax, Jim Bunning, Bob Moose,
Bill Stoneman, Ed Halicki, and  Darryl Kile all blanked the Mets.

10 pitchers threw no hitters before joining the Mets. Don Cardwell, Warren Spahn, Dean Chance, Dock Ellis, John Candelaria, Bret Saberhagen, Scott Erickson (2 starts for the Mets in 2004), Kenny Rogers (perfect game), Al Leiter,  and Hideo Nomo (before and after playing for the Mets).

4 Mets players have broken up no hitters in the ninth inning of games. Eddie Bressoud, Bud Harrelson, Ron Hodges, and Hubie Brooks broke pitchers dreams in the last frame.

There have been 35 one hitters in Mets history.

The San Diego Padres are the only team left with no no-hitters to their credit.

Thank You Johan Santana!

Some Light Reading For Team Collectors plus a Contest Pimp

Hello all. A very busy week at work, coaching pee wee baseball, and buying my daughter a car has kept me from posting for a few days but tonight I get a few minutes to show off some "light reading material" for team collectors, well for a few teams at least. (contest pimp to follow)

In 1988 Donruss releases Team Collection books for what appears to be only 5 teams. The Mets, Yankees, A's, Cubs, and Red Sox.

The Strawberry card is just for comparison of size

I tried to find out why only 5 teams were represented in this format but came up empty. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Each book has 27 cards from the 88 Donruss set across 3 uncut pages however they include a few players not in the regular standard set.  I will use the Mets (of course) book to show the format.

An autograph section for each player on the inside cover is a nice idea. It would be awesome to get all 27 players to sign in the same book. Most cards on the sheet look the same.......

Notice the card backs on the left side. (you can click to enlarge the picture) The card numbers seem to copy the  regular set except for one, Mackey Sasser's card number is NEW. I guess the regular set was designed and numbered before he was traded from the Pirates to the Mets on March 26, 1988. The Gene Walter and Jeff Innis are the same on the other pages.

Also included is a Stan Musial 24 piece puzzle. The regular set had the same puzzle except it was 63 pieces.

The inside back cover has a nice piece of info on the stadium and team history.

There you go 1988 team collectors books by Donruss.

In other Blogoland happenings, It's like having my own card shop is having a contest and pimping another cool blog Hello, Victory. Check it out and jump on in.

That's all for now, keep rocking your cardboard dreams!
