I Was Just Looking For A Bag Of Chips And I Found These (And A Contest)

Hey again all. Today I have pictures of a really cool vending machine I found outside a convenience store around the block from a job I was working on back in June. I went back to get some pictures (and more packs) to show everybody. At the end I will spin it into a contest.

I like to refer to this as the "Vend-O-Pack Machine"
Here is a shot from the street while I am in my car.

A bit closer. (click on the picture to enlarge and get a better look at all the different packs inside)

Even closer, the reflection off the glass is getting brighter. If you look close you can see me and some of my car.
A close up of two of the seven shelves. Each shelf has nine rows of packs. Here you can see the row of 2005 Topps Rookie Cup packs that I got for a post I have up now on BA Benny's Pack Rip Cafe and another one on A Pack To Be Named Later. Keep checking back to those two blogs as I now have a bunch of different pack ti rip from a few trips to the Vend-O-Pack machines.

There are actually two of these machines on two different sides of  town so depending where I am working or even shopping I can check them out. This one is in front of a convenience store and the other on is in a supermarket.  I can only guess that the owner is a dealer of some sort who has these old candy machines loaded with old stock he wants to move as the prices are very reasonable and there is quite a selection from old 80's wax to the new 2010 releases from Topps. I would estimate 40% to 50% is baseball and the rest is split up between football, basketball, hockey, wrestling, and kids non-sport packs. It's always fun to see what new stuff he adds every couple of months or so and I can get some different packs from stuff I didn't have the chance to collect when they were original released.

Leave a comment about odd places you find packs to rip or just a general comment and all who do comment will be entered into a contest for a Strat-O-Matic computer game and some cards from a team of your choice (baseball or football). One entry for a comment, another entry for being a follower, and another entry for promoting it on your blog and yet one more entry if you also follow my Pack Rip Cafe blog. (Yes I know it's a cheap way to get followers but I want to get more people to join over at the Cafe). That make a possible 4 entries per person.  I will keep it open for a little bit so spread the word.

I Drank the Orange stuff and 2 Rockies ended up in my mailbox

Hello all. I am back from a great family vacation in the Outer Banks part of North Carolina and things are piling up here at the Buffet. I have so much to catch up on between my job, home chores and blog stuff so here is a quick hit from an envelope I have had sitting around waiting to be posted.

A little while back, Dave of Drinking the Orange Kool-Aid held a contest to try and find a solution to storing his tobacco sized cards and all who offered suggestions were entered to win some jersey cards. After several good ideas were submitted he took all our names and threw them into the Random.org virtual shake up machine and after 5 randomizations (Thanks to his son for picking 5) my name was on top. Here are the prize cards:

2002 Topps 206
Larry Walker Game Worn Jersey (Rockies)
Todd Helton Game Worn Jersey (Rockies)

An appropriate prize, a couple of great tobacco sized cards. These are already set for storage though. Thanks for a great contest Dave.

Don't forget to check out the Pack Rip Cafe for my latest offering and get on the followers list.

Size Doesn't Matter. Coming Attractions

Hello Buffet readers. It's been very busy around here so posts have been scarce. I have been working a bunch to get ahead and  prepared for a family vacation I am leaving tomorrow night for and time has been very limited. I have this post and then will probably not be able to get any more in for a week to ten days while we are away.

Like the title says, "size doesn't matter", I will collect it if it is a Mets card.

Here are six Mets cards from my collection of several different sizes. Click on the picture to enlarge it and see the small ones better. The 2 on each end are the standard size for reference.

COMING ATTRACTIONS:
When I return I have a bunch of stuff to catch up on here at The Buffet.  Coming soon:
  • Trade posts
  • A 46 card COMC purchase posts
  • A box break from a 2008 box (try to guess which product)
  • A new feature on binder sorting preferences
  •  A new feature of pet peeves of mine when it comes to cards.
  • More pack rips on the Pack Rip Cafe and A Pack To Be Named Later
I will try to get some blog reading in while I am away but I am not sure of the internet situation there.

2008 Upper Deck Heroes Box Break

Hello all. Today I have a box break to share with you here at BA Benny's Baseball Card Buffet. I have been looking to do a box of 2008 UD Baseball Heroes for a while now and when I came across this box at a card shop (not my usual shop) I had to pull the trigger.

When this set was released I didn't really find it all that enticing but over time it has grown on me. The parallel cards really look nice to me and after some research the checklist is much better then I expected so my opinion changed to the point of wanting to do a box and chase the base set with some help from you fellow bloggers. (more on that later) Check out the videos and I have put up pictures of the hits and parallels below with the box breakdown. On the video I stated that I got an extra hit but I was actually mistaken. When I read the box more closely afterwards I see it said "3 memorabilia cards per box" which I thought included an auto but on a different part of the box it said "1 auto per box" so 4 hits per box is the norm, not 3 like I said in the videos. Sorry for the mistake.

BOX BREAKDOWN
24 packs / 8 cards per pack = 192 cards (This box yielded 194 cards by my count)
141of 200 for the base set.
29 duplicates from base set.
6 Yankee Stadium Legacy
14 serial numbered parallels
4 hits (3 game used memorabilia and 1 auto)

6 Yankee Stadium Legacy

4 Green Parallels /499
2 Gray Parallels /399

4 Red Parallels /249
1 Tan Parallel /299
1 Royal Blue /199

1 Brown Parallel /149
1 Beige Parallel /299

THE HITS!
Smoltz Jersey 038/200
Zanbrano Jersey 078/125
Guerrero Jersey 12/50
Kaline Auto 04/10

Over all I am very happy with this box and now really like this set. The hits were great, the Zambrano is up for trade and I could be persuaded to trade the Kaline auto but it would have to be something very special as I really like it.
I have decided to try and put together the base set and am looking to all you great readers of BA Benny's Baseball Card Buffet for help. I have put up a page on my sidebar of the cards I need so take a look. Anybody who can help me finish this set please e-mail me and we can work something out.

Card Of The Day Silver Platter Edition

Hey all, back today with a quick card post. I got this gem from a fellow trader on a trade post site (SCF) I used to use a lot but don't use much any more. It is a good group of traders and I have gotten some great cards in the past but there is too much emphasis on book value and it is just straight text posts on wants and needs. I enjoy the whole blog community atmosphere much better and only occasionally check the boards now. A good trader I have had several trades in the past contacted me about interest in a Brian Giles jersey card I had and offered me this beauty.

2004 Fleer Greats Forever Mets
Ray Knight GU Jersey sn'd 109/149

I couldn't refuse so the trade was on. A great jersey card and my first Ray Knight game used card.

Hey again all. Today I have some cards from Mike Pelfrey Collectibles as he is thinning out his collection and changing the direction of his blog so his sale of cards was a great score for me. It always feels better spending some money to help out a fellow blogger then just funding an anonymous E-bay seller. On with the loot.

2009 Topps Chrome Daniel Murphy Gold Refractor sn'd 47/50

Three very nice John Maine cards. Too bad he is on the verge of being a total bust as he has some sweet cards out there. I only need a dual of him from 09 UD to go with the single and triple I have now.

Carlos Beltran
2008 Upper Deck Heroes gu jersey sn'd 068/200
2007 Ultimate America's Pastime gu patch sn'd 33/50

My Rookie Card Challenge Contribution.

I have decided to throw my hat into the ring for For Cards Sake rookie card challenge. I have as my entry an Eddie Murray rookie card.

1978 Topps #36 Eddie Murray RC
Funny how he played 160 games in 1977 yet his rookie card didn't come out til 1978. Notice the rookie cup logo, how many rc's have one of those on them?
This card is special to me because it is one of the few cards I have left from my collecting days as a child. As has happened to many, my mother too had thrown out my baseball card collection except she missed a small box that contained a hundred or so 1978 Topps cards. The handful of Mets and Yankees along with a few other players I collect pale in comparison to the significance of this HOF'ers rookie card. I still remember as a kid buying 1978 wax packs with the red wrappers and trying to put this set together. I remember the first appearances of Seattle Mariners and Toronto Blue Jays cards and while I can't remember the specific day I got this Murray card, I do recall the "coolness" of the rookie cup on it so it immediately was one of my favorites from the set even before I could know of it's true greatness. These sell for $30-$60 graded on E-bay while one like I have here average $10. There you have it, my entry into the rookie card challenge.

More Mailbox Goodies Delivered To The Buffet

Hey all. Today I have more mailbox goodies from back during the two weeks of craziness of overtime and fundraising. The first package is from Chris, aka Fan Of Reds, from Nachos Grande. We hooked up on a 2010 Topps inserts for inserts deal. I sent a bunch of Peak Performance among other stuff and I got these.

Munson short print parallel. Thanks Chris!!

The Escobar bat plus his base, a Fonzie, and a Delgado sn'd 06/49.

Three Great Jose Reyes cards and a Pedro to go with them.

Stacks Of Fun From Stats On The Back In My Mailbox and Ginter Case Break

Hello again Buffet readers. Today I have a trade post about a package I received from Stats On The Back. They post stacks of cards from specific players and offer them for trade. I have made several trades with them and always been very happy with the returns. This time around I grabbed 2 stacks, Pete Rose, Fernando Valenzuela, and a Nolan Ryan single. The Pete Rose cards basically doubled my count as did the Fernando lot.

19 Pete Rose Cards
(The only one I had already not pictured)
A trifecta of 1982's, Did anybody know he spent a short time with the Expos?

A couple of K-Marts, some highlights, and one with Doc.

Two managers, one with Rusty, and some Sportflics.

10 Fernando Valenzuela
5 Donruss plus a Topps

Some more 81 Topps, a John Franco buddy shot, and the 1980 Nolan Ryan '79 Strikeout Leaders w/ JR Richard.

A great pile of cards to add to my collection. Thanks!!

On another note, David, aka Tunguska, of Long Fly Ball to Because is hosting a 2010 Allen and Ginter case break. That's right, a case of the long awaited 2010 edition of Ginter! There are still good teams available and you can take advantage of the favorable exchange rate to the Canadian Dollar. Go check it out and jump on board.

Also don't forget to check out my new endeavor BA Benny's Pack Rip Cafe. Today I have a pack of 93 Pinnacle on tap.
